Why Consumers Should Think About Ink When Buying a Printer

Most home computer owners need a printer for some reason, and while printers vary greatly from one manufacturer to the next, there are some general things to consider when buying a laser printer, multifunction printer, copier, or really any device that provides similar function. One of the most important aspects of a laser printer tends to be its ink.

For one, the ink cartridge of a printer can have a direct affect on the lifespan of the device. Printers that use ink cartridges with built-in print heads tend to last longer, because print heads are switched out on a regular basis. If you want to buy printers with unchangeable print heads that can be very problematic, because if and when the print heads jam, the printer may be useless. This can be an especially big loss with multifunction printers, which tend to cost far more than simple colour laser printers.

There's also the matter of cost. Most of the cost of a colour laser printer will come from new ink cartridges, not from the printer itself. This is because printer companies also make the cartridges, and they patent their designs, which allows them to greatly mark up the cost of ink. Consumers end up paying far more for printer ink than the ink's actually worth. As such, it's a good idea to research the ink costs of the laser printer of your choice before making a purchase, especially when buying a high capacity office printer.

Printer ink is an expensive but necessary accessory, so be sure to consider ink when buying any new printer. Try to find cartridges with built in print heads, and look at cost and ink availability. You'll be much happier with your purchase if you buy printer that's durable, inexpensive, and unencumbered with the hassles of low-quality printer ink cartridges.
